How To Optimize Your Email Marketing Strategy : Part 1: Optimizing Your Lead Magnet

You’ve checked off all the boxes on your email marketing strategy. You’ve created a killer lead magnet and offer it throughout your site, you include your calls to action at the end of your blog posts to get readers to opt into your list, and you may even be super savvy at nurturing your webinar list or Youtube subscribers, BUT…

You want MORE.

You’re ready for more subscribers because you know “the money is in the list” but what’s a girl to do when she feels like she’s already taken every online education course or read every successful entrepreneur’s blog??

ONE WORD: OPTIMIZE.

Now it’s time to optimize your email marketing strategy using all the existing resources you already have, starting with your lead magnet.

Trust me girl, I know exactly what it’s like to feel like a pro in some areas of my own business as well but-

“We can’t get content with our marketing strategy when we aren’t content with the results.”  – Samantha Royer

(I don’t even have Twitter, but if I did, I’d totally tweet that lol.)

That’s why I’m writing this blog post and hooking you up with my printable checklist for you to download so you can start skyrocketing your email list growth and scale your business.

HERE ARE 4 THINGS YOU CAN DO TO OPTIMIZE YOUR LEAD MAGNET TO GROW YOUR EMAIL LIST TODAY:

#1: Try new placements for your lead magnet on your site.

Best practice (and results) are typically found on the “above the fold” placements of your site. So this means the visible portion of your site before the user has to scroll down the page. Try placing your lead magnet at the top of your home page and at the very top before your blog post, but don’t knock “below the fold” placements because you should always give the reader a call to action at the end of your page.

If you use opt-ins (like quick 1 page PDF’s, check-lists, etc)  instead of your lead magnet (e-books, multi-page PDF guides, etc), try placing your lead magnet in the footer of your navigation bar.

And lastly, don’t forget about other placements like your side bar or your main navigation bar and check out the full list for even more ideas for your site.

#2: A/B SPLIT TEST THE CALL TO ACTION ON YOUR LEAD MAGNET.

Update your call to action for your lead magnet by changing the copy and creative images. My “rule” is just this:

Don’t test more than one “variable” (aka “thing”) at a time. You can see which headline, body copy, button copy, or new image gets you more email addresses, BUT if you change them all at the same time, you’ll never know what actually worked (or didn’t!) so start with one change at a time. PLEASE. 🙏

For example, using the image above where I say “Snag your free strategy call”, I could test the call to action using something else like “Get your free site audit”, “Free consultation call”, etc. or I could change the button copy to something else to see if that increases the email addresses I’m collecting from that page.

Pro tip: if you’re afraid to test anything because you fear losing out on subscribers, try just changing the call to action on ONE particular page or platform before rolling it out across all of your sites/platforms.

#3: PLACE YOUR LEAD MAGNET ACROSS ALL SOCIAL PLATFORMS, ESPECIALLY IN THESE NOT-SO-OBVIOUS PLACES: 😲

We all use Facebook posts to promote our lead magnet from time to time, but we don’t all use features like the Facebook cover image or the Facebook “tab” available for businesses. Include your lead magnet in your Facebook cover image or try to embed your Convertkit form onto your Facebook tab to boost your email leads from Facebook.

Have Pinterest? Pin your lead magnet image!

Try a/b split testing the calls to action like we chatted about in #2 above, frequently pin your image with new words and images and drive them straight to your landing page to see which version grows your email list more efficiently.

I also just wrote a blog post last week about “How to use Instagram Insights to grow your business” that’ll give you the low-down with a step-by-step tutorial for how to get more email leads from your lead magnet over on the ‘gram. 🤗

#4: START KEEPING TRACK OF YOUR EMAIL MARKETING STRATEGY

The more you know, the more you grow. -Samantha Royer

(Seriously, I’m about to get a Twitter account so you can tweet these puppies!)

What if your Facebook audience responds differently than your Pinterest audience? Don’t you wanna know if they do since you create a custom strategy for each platform? I thought you might say yes 😉

Make sure if you aren’t already, to keep track of your optimization efforts for your email marketing strategy so you can see what things worked (or didn’t) for each source of marketing you have.

Basically, you want to create a “before” and “after” picture.

For your site, try setting Google Analytics Goal Tracking for your pages, so you can see how many people signed up from certain pages and offers across your site.

Or if you’re using Converkit landing pages or Leadspages, use a different landing page for each platform to measure results separately, so you can create a custom strategy for each unique platform + audience based on the results that work best for each one.

Because seriously, one size marketing does NOT fit all, Amen?

And as promised, you can snag the whole checklist here so you can keep track of what things you’ve tried and want to try…and because let’s be real, pinning this blog post to your fave board isn’t going to auto-magically grow your email list if you don’t actually read it again…so print it out and slap that puppy into your planner so you actually do something with it!

Because when you are routinely in optimization mode, you can:

  • Be aware of expectations: how much your list is growing (or not),  what results are “good” and “bad”…
  • Forecast and set more achievable goals and plan a strategy for the future…
  • Know when it’s time to make a new lead magnet …
  • Share all your optimization strategies with your virtual assistant or team so you can delegate and automate…

…all while routinely growing your biz with the same resources you already have.

So promise me you’ll download the entire checklist and start optimizing your email strategy with your lead magnet today, ok??
